對此，陳水扁辦公室今天(18日)發布新聞稿表示，雖經諮詢陳水扁醫療小組專業意見評估後，小組成員一致認為出席國宴應有助於陳總統所罹創傷後壓力症候群等病情改善所亟需之情境上治療，法務部應當尊重醫療專業；但考量520當晚國宴係新總統蔡英文的專屬場合，唯一的焦點理應為蔡英文新總統，扁辦感謝蔡英文的邀請，惟思慮若干干擾因素或非理性炒作而造成失焦，恐違美意。因此，陳水扁伉儷決定婉拒出席，然而對於蔡英文總統的就職，仍給予完全的祝福與支持，也呼籲台灣人民團結支持新政府，並祈求天佑台灣、台灣加油。
扁辦也表示，經查本邀請卡係由總統府典禮科作業以總統府函件經總統府郵局正式發出，邀請前總統陳水扁伉儷出席520總統就職晚宴，邀請卡署名為蔡英文，無論是基於總統府慣例抑或對於卸任國家元首之禮遇與尊重，扁辦敬表感謝。
